The Sacred Journey: Understanding Hindu Funeral Rites (Antyesti)
Antyesti, the final sacrament (samskara) in a Hindu's life, is a profoundly important series of rituals that helps guide the soul on its journey from the physical world. At Chapel Ridge, we provide the environment and support necessary to perform these sacred rites with the utmost respect and adherence to tradition.
At the Time of Passing & Preparation
Upon death, it is traditional to place a few drops of Ganga water and a Tulsi leaf in the mouth of the deceased. We provide a private, respectful space for the family to perform the ceremonial washing (Abhisegam) and dressing of their loved one in new, unstitched clothes.
The Cremation Ceremony
The cremation is a pivotal moment in the Antyesti rites. Our chapels can accommodate pre-cremation pujas and viewings. The Karta (chief mourner, usually the eldest son) leads the ceremony. We provide witness rooms where the family can observe the start of the cremation, fulfilling the tradition of the Karta lighting the pyre (or initiating the cremation process).
Post-Cremation
Rituals
Following the cremation, the collection of ashes (Asthi Sanchay) is a key step. We facilitate this process with care and provide the family with the remains in a suitable urn. We can also offer guidance and support as the family observes the traditional 10- or 13-day mourning period, leading to the final ceremonies that mark the soul's peaceful transition.
