Repatriation of Casket

Transporting a casket to Africa requires strict adherence to both Canadian export laws and the specific import regulations of the destination country.

Common Requirements

  • Original Passport: The deceased’s passport is required. (Note: For countries like Eritrea, if a passport is missing, we can assist in applying for a temporary travel document/ID).
  • Metal Sealer Casket: Many African countries (especially Nigeria and Ghana) strictly require the remains to be placed in a hermetically sealed metal casket, often inside a wooden outer case.
  • In-Country Permissions: Some nations, such as Ethiopia and Italy, require a permission letter from the destination government before the Embassy in Canada will issue a shipping permit.
  • Receiving Funeral Home: You must provide the full contact details of the funeral home or family member receiving the remains.

  • Coordination of the "Apostille" or Legalization of Canadian documents.

  • Carry-On: Permitted for some destinations provided the urn is X-ray scannable and you have the correct Consular paperwork.
  • Unaccompanied Cargo: Required for certain destinations or if family is not traveling.
