A Guide to Buddhist Funeral Rites

A Path to a Peaceful Transition

For Buddhist families in Markham, Richmond Hill, and across the Greater Toronto Area, a funeral is a serene and deeply meaningful ceremony. It is guided by the principles of compassion and the belief in reincarnation, focusing on ensuring a peaceful transition for the loved one. The service is not just a farewell, but an opportunity for the living to generate positive karma (gōng dé, 功德) that can aid the deceased on their journey. At Chapel Ridge, we understand the solemn importance of these rites and are here to help you honour your loved one according to the teachings of Buddha.

The Buddhist View of Life and Death

  • In Buddhism, death is not seen as an end, but as a transition from one life to the next.

  • The state of a person's mind at the moment of death is considered critically important, as it influences their rebirth. Therefore, Buddhist funeral traditions are designed to create a calm, peaceful, and positive environment around the departed.

  • The ultimate goal is to help them detach from worldly concerns and move toward a favourable rebirth or, ideally, liberation from the cycle of rebirth (samsara) itself.

Key Rituals and Ceremonies

A Buddhist farewell is marked by several key practices, all intended to create merit and facilitate a peaceful journey for the spirit.

Chanting by Monks or Nuns

One of the most central elements is the chanting of sutras and mantras by Buddhist monks or nuns. We are honoured to help families from across Toronto and the surrounding areas coordinate with their local temples to have venerable members lead these ceremonies. The resonant sound of the chants, such as the Amitabha Sutra, is believed to purify the space, calm the spirit of the deceased, and guide them toward the Pure Land.

The Casket-Side Service

During the visitation or vigil, a casket-side service is often held. This ceremony typically includes:

  • Chanting: Monks, nuns, or lay members lead the family in chanting.
  • Incense Offering: Family members, starting with the eldest son and proceeding in order of family hierarchy, will offer incense to pay their respects.
  • Offerings of Flowers and Fruit: These offerings symbolize the impermanence of life (anicca) and are a sign of respect.

Our facilities are designed to provide a serene and dignified setting for these important rituals, accommodating both intimate family gatherings and larger services.

The Importance of a Calm Atmosphere

Maintaining a peaceful environment is essential. Loud crying or emotional outbursts are traditionally discouraged, as it is believed such displays can disturb the spirit of the deceased and hinder their peaceful transition. We strive to create a tranquil atmosphere where your family can grieve and reflect in a quiet, respectful manner.

Attire and Etiquette for Guests

To show respect, family members and guests typically wear sombre colours. Black, white, or dark, muted tones are most appropriate. It is customary for guests to offer a monetary gift in a white envelope, known as "white gold" (báijīn, 白金), to help the family with funeral expenses.

Whether your family is in North York, Scarborough, or right here in Markham, Chapel Ridge is committed to honouring your Buddhist faith.
