Unique Obituaries and How You Can Have One, Too

Earlier this month there was a trending story about a women’s unique obituary. When first reported, it was said she wrote the incredibly humourous obituary herself, but it was later corrected that it was her children who penned it.

Previously, we posted a blog about how to write a traditional obituary. This post was full of common practices for those who want to keep it simple and classic.

The unique obituary of Sybil Marie Hicks was the complete opposite of simple and traditional! While humous and unique obituaries aren’t right for everyone, but in this case, the deceased’s children felt it captured their mother’s personality. Once the death notice went viral, people across the country were laughing and crying about a women they never knew.

One line that was particularly hilarious was this:

“I finally have the smoking hot body I have always wanted … having been cremated.”

This family isn’t alone with this unique obituary. There have been other stories in the past about unique or funny death notices. Generally, if you want to go off-script with the tribute, you need to make sure it suits the person. If the person had a great sense of humour and was always cracking jokes in life, then of course it makes sense to lend this voice to them posthumously.

Don’t Forget the Heart

It’s important to note that even in Hick’s hilarious obit, there are some genuine heartfelt sentiments. There will still be people who miss them, so that needs to be recognized. It can be woven through the humour and lightheartedness.
