Funerals and memorials can provide a lot of comfort to the living, especially if the service is designed to pay tribute to the deceased individual. While it can be difficult to make these types of decisions when grieving, the service can be so much more meaningful when it’s personalized.

Here are some tips to help you plan a unique service:

MUSIC

While your church or funeral home might recommend some common hymns or songs, the choice is ultimately yours. Did your loved one have a favourite song? Or a favourite artist? Is there a song that reminds you of them or one that sums up their life? Funerals do not have to have the standard organ music if you don’t want.

Do you want a live musician to play? Some families hire acoustic guitar players, pianists, or even bagpipers. Talk to the funeral home about how they can accommodate your requests.

VISUALS

Many funeral homes can set up easels where you can display boards with family photos of the deceased. As part of her research, she has been visiting cemeteries, interviewing funeral directors, and consulting with a wide range of people in what she calls the “death care” industry.

Overall, Longard wants people to know there options when it comes to your arrangements after-death. While people may not want to discuss the inevitable, she thinks it’s important for people to know that there are eco-friendly funeral and burial options.

Through her research, she’s seeing that some Canadian cemeteries are already offering eco-friendly burial options, such as compostable caskets and communal burial plots. This is positive, yet not everyone knows about it.

People have different reasons for wanting these green options. Some people are concerned with how the traditional methods impact the planet, while others are moved by the concept of being returned to the earth in a natural way.

In the article from The Canadian Press , president of the Funeral Service Association of Canada, Yves Berthiaume, said that the issue isn’t a matter of funeral homes not having these options, but more the fact that people don’t know to ask about them. There seems to be a lack of demand in this area currently, which of course, can and will change over time.

Another reason why not everyone is adapting to the practice is the cost. It is more costly for funeral homes to stock eco-friendly products, so they need to charge more for green funerals.

Longard’s project is aimed at creating awareness of green options – getting more people to talk about their wishes and look into the environmentally responsible options available.

Even though Mother’s Day has come and gone for this year, it’s not too late to discuss one aspect of this holiday that can be particularly difficult for some: how to “celebrate” if you’ve lost your mother.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s never easy to lose a parent; specifically your mother. That said, Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be a sad day. It can be a wonderful time to reflect on happy memories. In fact, you don’t even need one day to do that – you can do this any day you want.

Here are 10 ways to celebrate your mother this spring, even when she’s gone:

Plant something – Whether you put some flowers at her burial site, or plant a tree in your yard, this can be a nice way to pay tribute her. This is especially meaningful if your mother was fond of gardening.
Look through old photo albums – Sure, this will likely cause a few tears, but hopefully these will be happy tears, as these images will evoke fond memories.
Spend time with surviving family – If you have a living parent, spend time with them, as they might be missing her as well. If you have siblings, children, cousins, aunts, uncles, or friends that feel like family, make a concerted effort to see them. They can be a great comfort when you’re feeling lonely.
Write down your feelings – Journaling can be a very therapeutic activity. There might be things you’re feeling that you can’t express out loud, but you might feel better if you write them down.
Practise Self-care – When you put so much energy into external things in your life you can forget to take care of yourself sometimes. Self-care isn’t about being selfish, it’s about doing nice things for yourself to feel better. When you’re sad, stressed, or anxious, it can be very calming to treat yourself. Now that 2016 is behind us, we can look back at our triumphs and our losses. For many, 2016 was the year they lost their heroes. Whether you mourned the deaths of some of music’s greatest – David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and recently George Michael; or said goodbye to some big screen greats, such as Alan Richman, Carrie Fisher, and Debbie Reynolds, the way we collectively got through it isn’t all that different from the ways we recover from the loss of our own loved ones – through sharing our memories.

Whether you’re listening to “Space Oddity” on vinyl, or re-watching the Star Wars Trilogy, or simply flipping through family photo albums, it is comforting to remember those we cared about during their best years. This is a healthy and normal way to grieve – regardless of how famous or well known the deceased was.

The Big 5: Understanding Grief

While it is recognized that everyone grieves in different ways, there is still something quite universal about the experience. According to the popular Kübler-Ross model (or the five stages of grieving, as many know it as), terminally ill patients, and those who are losing, or have lost, a loved one experience five key emotions as they work through their grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance .

While we recognize that this is not everyone’s experience, these are universal experiences that most people can relate to in some way when facing a tremendous loss.

DENIAL

Denial is listed first as it is often the snap emotion that we feel when we are given bad news. It’s almost our brain trying to protect us from emotional hardship.

“No, this can’t be true. You must have me confused with someone else.”

Even though deep down we know what we’ve just learned it true, we can’t help but go into denial mode. Whether a doctor has just told you have a fatal, incurable disease, or a family member has called to tell you that someone close to you has just passed away, feelings of denial can be strong.

ANGER

The denial stage is often short-lived, which is why anger often follows. Whether you’re looking for someone to blame or you’re feeling like you live in a cruel and unfair world, anger can be a visceral reaction when dealing with a traumatic event.

“This is unfair! Why is this happening to me?”

BARGAINING

Bargaining can be one of the most heartbreaking stages of grief. For the terminally ill, this might be, “If I get better, I promised I’ll take better care of myself.” For those grieving over the loss of a loved one, they might bargain with a higher power, “If I could only have one more day with them, I promise I’ll be a better person.”

What’s heartbreaking is that these requests cannot be granted, and these promises are often made in vain due to emotional stress.

DEPRESSION

This can be the toughest stage to overcome. After denial, anger, and bargaining fail to change the outcome, you can fall into a deep depression knowing there’s nothing you can do. During this stage you might feel defeated – that there’s no point in trying to do anything, because you cannot change what’s happened. You might refuse to talk to anyone, and avoid social interaction entirely.

Some people find it hard to get out of this stage alone, and require grief counselling. Having someone to talk to is important for many people going through depression due to grief. For some counselling is the only way they can reach the fifth and final stage.

ACCEPTANCE

While still sad, this is the stage where the patient or loved one has accepted what’s happened and has more or less made their peace with it. It’s about understanding that what’s happened, or what’s about to happen, was and is inevitable. When you accept this you can come to terms with immortality, which is part of being human.

The True Meaning of a Bucket List

The term “bucket list” gets thrown around so often these days it’s practically lost it’s intended meaning. For many, it’s almost a wish list of experiences they want to have in their lifetime. The true origin is a big more serious.

The term was popularized by the 2007 Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson film The Bucket List . It’s the story of two terminally ill men who escape the cancer ward at the hospital to have an adventure before they... kick the bucket.

The key to creating a good and meaningful bucket list is to be realistic. The idea behind making such a list is about living life to the fullest, and doing things you always wanted to do, but held back for one reason or another. That said, only write down that you want to climb Mount Everest if you A) are interested in climbing mountains, B) can handle the mental and physical toll such a climb would take on your body, and C) if you can finance such an expedition.

The point is keep it manageable and personal. The goal is to check as many things off that list as possible – not to leave this earth with a list of shoulda-coulda-wouldas. So fill that list with things you realistically can do, but just haven’t.

Don’t Google “what should I put on my ‘Bucket List’?” You’re missing the point if you have to borrow ideas from others. The best way to write an honest to-do list for life is to look deep inside yourself and think about all the things you want to do. Are there any foods you want to try that you were always afraid to? Do you want to learn a new skill, such as knitting, woodworking, or painting? Do you want to take a road trip across the country? Get a tattoo? Learn Japanese? Everyone has those secret desires that quietly burn inside us that we repress because it seems impractical or frivolous. Fulfill those dreams!

How to Cope when a Young Person Dies

While death is sad at any age. When we care about someone, the loss is felt regardless of how old they were. That said, many of us have an easier time accepting the death of an elderly family member, as these deaths are sometimes followed by feelings of relief. “I’m glad they’re no longer suffering,” and “they lived a long life” are common refrains. But when a young person dies – especially unexpectedly – it hits you like a ton of bricks.

When a person’s life is cut short, we are left questioning what it all means. How can life be so cruel?

When a young person dies, you might feel depressed, numb…in a state of shock. You might feel like you’ll never feel good again. That this grief is a permanent state. And while life may never feel like it did before, recovery is possible. You just have to be patient and kind to yourself.

Allow yourself to feel

Don’t bottle up your feelings. Let them out in a safe and judgement-free environment. It’s sad when a young person dies. Whether they were a friend, a family member, a classmate or a colleague, it can be a sober reminder of the fragility of life.

Seek and accept support

How to Grieve Over the Holidays

With Hanukkah starting soon and Christmas less than a month away, you are probably expected to share in the merriment. But if you’re grieving the loss of a loved one, you’re problem not feeling very joyful. It can be difficult to know how to grieve over the holidays, when everyone wants you to be happy, but you can’t help but feel sad and alone.

There is no cure all or simple solution – you just need patience and understanding from those around you.

How to Grieve Over the Holidays

Include your loved one in some way during the holidays. This could be through religious rituals – such as prayer or lighting a candle at church. It could also be done in a secular way, such as preparing their favourite dish as part of the holiday meal, or putting an ornament they loved on the tree.
Have a back-up plan. Maybe the day before a big holiday dinner you’ll be feeling great, but then you wake up and everything feels wrong. Allow yourself to change plans if you need to. Tell your loved ones you will try to make it, but will plan for a quiet meal at home if need be.
Remember that the holidays will return next year. If this year just isn’t feeling right, skip it and don’t feel guilty. There’s always next year.
Start a new tradition. If the holidays without your loved one is too difficult because of all the traditions tied to that individual, change it up. Start new traditions. It can mark the beginning of something new.
Don’t feel guilty over your grief. You don’t need one more thing to feel sad about. Be kind to yourself. Allow yourself to feel so your can heal.
Let loved ones in. Even if you’re not up for celebrating, don’t shut family and friends out. Let them be there for you. Let them help. If they want to make you tea and bring you food, let them. It all comes from a place of love and concern.
It’s okay to have fun. If you do feel up for for celebrating, that’s okay. You don’t have to feel like you’re not sad enough, or should be still in perpetual mourning. If you feel like participating in the festivities, that doesn’t mean you aren’t still missing your loved one.

Some people are trying to change this. That is where the death cafe comes into play. A death cafe isn’t as dark as it sounds. It’s safe space where people, mostly strangers, can gather around a table and openly talk about death.

It’s not meant to be morbid, but rather comforting and educating. Death is part of the human experience, and those who set up these death cafes are trying to bring these topics back to the table, rather than allowing them to be swept under the rug.

Why you should talk about death

Death cafes are trying to de-stigmatize the topic of death because it’s important as humans to be open and honest about one of life’s most shocking realities. By becoming more comfortable talking about death, participants can begin asking the hard questions and have real discussions with loved ones.

Many people lose a loved one without ever knowing their true wishes. Being able to have a real talk about death means you can learn these things before it’s too late. Spring Self-Care for the Grieving

You’ve probably heard the term “Self-Care” a lot lately. While we might say it’s a trend, we hope it’s a concept that’s here to say. While everyone can benefit from practicing self-care, it seems to be particularly important for those grieving the loss of a loved one.

When someone you cared about passes away life just feels different. While it may seem like you’ll never feel “normal” again – there are things you can do for yourself to ease the pain.

Remember, self-care doesn’t mean you forget to care for others, nor does it mean that you’re being selfish. Many people believe self-care is necessary for our mental health.

Unplug

Technology and social media can be great tools for communication – but it can be all-consuming sometimes. When someone you loved dies, just checking your social media can drum up emotions. And while it’s healthy to face those feelings, it can also be damaging to obsess over it.

Social media is a great vehicle to receive support, but it can also be overwhelming. It’s important to step back sometimes, and focus on something else. Your digital world will still be there when you return, but it’s important to set down the phone, tablet, or computer for a few hours, a day, a weekend, a week…whatever you need.

Treat Yourself

Craving a nice meal, go out and get one. Want to go away for the weekend for a break, book a trip. Want a massage? Schedule an appointment.

Treating yourself doesn’t even have to cost money. It could be as simple as taking a long, relaxing bath, indulging in a much-needed afternoon nap, or sleeping in on the weekend. You could light a scented candle, or play some music.

When you’re stressed and upset, it can be so therapeutic to say “yes” to yourself. Many people try so hard to return to their normal lives that they burn themselves out. It’s okay to say, “yeah, I’ve been through a lot and I’m still hurting, so I’m going to take care of myself – mind, body and soul.”

Quality Alone Time

While being alone with your thoughts can be scary for some – especially when you’re grieving a loss – it can be incredibly freeing. Quality alone time doesn’t mean just sitting in a chair thinking about everything. It could be reading a good book, drinking a hot cup of tea, doing yoga, meditating, or taking that bath we mentioned above.

If you want to cry – cry. This exercise isn’t meant to stifle your emotions – merely create a safe environment to heal.

Create a Safe Space

Surround yourself with things and people who add value to your life. You might be feeling like you’re missing something right now – and that’s normal. While you might not ever feel the same again, you can feel better. Go out for coffee or drinks with good friends, laugh, share stories. Expressing joy again doesn’t mean you don’t still miss your loved one, it just means you are taking care of yourself and are healing.

Should Children Attend Funerals?

There’s been a lot of royal news coming out of the UK recently – specifically relating to the upcoming 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, and how her now adult sons are keeping her memory alive.

One article I read featured comments from Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, where he was expressing his displeasure that his nephews (William and Harry) were made to walk behind their mother’s casket during the procession. The boys were 12 and 15 at the time. According to Spencer, the boys were asked to do this even though they didn’t want to.

While most children aren’t royalty – in the public eye constantly – but the question still comes up: should children attend funerals?

There is no true answer.

Each funeral is different and circumstances vary. You have to look at several factors, such as, what is their relationship to the deceased? If the funeral is for a parent, sibling, or grandparent, having the children there could be important – depending on the ages.

Infant and toddler children often attend funerals with their parents. Some parents may want to sit at the back, or near an exit so they can swiftly go to another room if the child becomes fussy or noisy. The New York Times recently published a piece written by Dr. Sara Manning Peskin called “ The Symptoms of Dying .” The article discusses the common symptoms of death. It states that while we all die of different things, at different ages, there are some universal symptoms. By understanding these symptoms – that may happen all at once, or quietly – we might feel a little bit better about what’s happening to the person we love.

Peskin mentions that many of the symptoms of death sound worse than they really are, or the pain is managed by doctors and palliative care specialists.

In another article from the UK paper the Independent titled, “ Dying is a ‘happier’ experience than most people imagine, say scientists, ” the writer shares some insights from the terminally ill. While many of us fear death, researchers from the University of North Carolina have found that for some, it isn’t as lonely and scary as we’re led to believe.

The researchers analyzed blog posts written by terminally ill patients and the last words of death row inmates and found their words to be much more positive than one might expect. Instead of expressing fear, depression, anger, and loneliness, many expressed gratitude, love, and connection.

The same researchers then asked healthy people to imagine they had a month to live and to share their thoughts. Not surprisingly the words from the healthy group were much more negative than those of the terminally ill. Our perception of death is much sadder and scarier when it is not our actual reality, but an imaged one.

In the end, when a loved one is dying it’s important to be there for them. Surround them with love and support so that when their time is up, they will perhaps feel a little bit better about it.

Invite them to gatherings, clubs and events – In order to maintain a healthy social life and stave off loneliness, widows need to keep their human connections. Depression can be very isolating, and sometimes you need to intervene to help guide them back to their social circle. Ask them to join your weekly card game, host a weekly lunch or tea with friends, or invite them to try a new hobby with you.
Call – If you feel like dropping by is inappropriate or invasive, and you’re not sure they’re ready to go out and socialize yet, give them a call. Even if it’s just a short chat, it’s nice to check in and they will know you care.
Reaffirm that your door is always open – Even if they say no to your invitations or say they don’t need anything, always let them know that you’re there for them when and if they need you. You might get frustrated and feel like they’re pushing you away – but don’t let that feeling consume you. Understand that they’re going through a very difficult time and keep the lines of communication open.

Pet Burials: New for Canada

Up until recently, pet burials had to happen in specific places separate from human burial sites. However, a cemetery in Laval, Quebec , is recognizing your furry friends as a member of the family, allowing them to be buried alongside their human owners.

The Laval Cemetery now has a “Masters and Companions” section, allowing pets and humans to be buried side-by-side in a joint plot.

While this cemetery already had a section for pet burials, this section is new. Apparently, many people had requested to be buried alongside their pet, thus this idea was born.

While this concept is not widespread across Canada, we can definitely see this idea taking off. As a local funeral home in Markham, we talk to families and individuals all the time about their wishes. Pets are often cherished companions, especially to those nearing the end of their lives here on earth. It makes sense that they would want to be buried with them.

How do these type of pet burials work?

These burial plots work much in the same way that family plots do. The plots have space for one human and two pets. For those who opt for cremation can also be buried along with their pet’s ashes.

In some cases, the cherished pet passes first, so the living owner pre-arranges their own burial in a plot that will accommodate the deceased pet. For those who pass away before their pet, and the pet will be cared for by a living relative, you can arrange for it to be buried with you when it’s day comes. No pets are being prematurely put down to accommodate this.

Have you ever heard of an end-of-life doula? While most people recognize the term doula as related to birth and babies, there are now doulas specializing in death and dying.

For those who have received the unfortunate news that they have a terminal illness or that their health is declining, it can be comforting to have someone who is not a friend or family member guide you through these final months. That is the role of an end-of-life doula.

What an end-of-life doula does

A doula is not a nurse. It’s important to make that distinction. They are not there to provide medical care. That said, their role is still very important to terminally ill patients and their families.

“ No funeral!? ”

That’s the reaction many people have when a loved one tells them their wishes, or when they’re told there will be no service for dearly departed friend or family member. It can be hard to believe that someone wouldn’t want this time-honoured tradition.

While we at Chapel Ridge are in the funeral business, we also understand that everyone is different in how they want their loved ones to mourn them.

For the living, it can be hard to get closure or come to terms with the death without some sort of service. When someone says “no funeral” it doesn’t necessarily mean they want nothing. For many the traditional funeral service – with loved ones all in black and the somber tone of the proceedings – isn’t what they want. What this often means is that they would prefer to be honoured in a different way.

No Funeral? What are the Alternatives?

For many, it’s the traditional funeral that they don’t want. They don’t want their loved ones mourning, but rather celebrating. This is why many people hold what they call a “celebration of life” ceremony. It’s 2020, so funerals don’t have to be what they once were.

Celebrations of life or memorial services can be held in funeral homes, but they don’t have to be. You can hold them in a private home, an event space, outdoors or a restaurant. They can be informal gatherings of close family, or bigger events that you plan in advance. You can still have speeches, readings and music if you wish, or you can make it more casual – allowing people to mingle and share stories in smaller groups. It’s really up to you.

After someone has died you might hear people use the term wake and you might be wondering what it means.

You might assume this term is interchangeable with “reception” or “viewing”, and sometimes people use it like that. However, the a wake is a tradition with a very specific meaning and context that separates it from other pre- and post-funeral gatherings.

Traditional Wake

This is a pre-funeral gathering where loved ones sit with and observe the body of the deceased. Traditionally this is done at home, with the casket placed in a parlour or common area – open for viewing.

Today, wakes can take place in a funeral home and are often called viewings. Viewings can also occur during a visitation with an open casket. Some differentiate a wake and a viewing as a former is often more of a social event. Wakes are also considered more religious than viewings.

The term “wake” comes from old English and literally means to keep watch.

An Irish Wake

Traditionally, funerals, wakes, memorials and visitations are solemn events. However, in the Irish tradition a wake is a celebratory gathering. The Irish believe that the dead and the living must come together. The wake takes place in the home of the deceased and it is decorated with special items significant to the dead. The casket should be placed near an open window to allow the spirit to leave peacefully. In a way, Irish wakes are very superstitious.

The deceased is dressed in their best clothes and candles are lit at their feet and head. Some drape rosary beads over their head. So, while it’s a celebration of life, it’s still steeped in religion and spirituality.

When it comes to picking an appropriate outfit for a funeral, don’t focus so much on the colours of the garments, but more on the styles.

You might own black clothing, but it might be too casual or too flashy for a funeral. But every family is different – so what constitutes appropriate will depend on that. However, if you are a distant relative or casual friend of the family, err on the side of caution.

Thank you cards are a way to show gratitude towards friends and family who are there for you or show generosity in some way. After a death, many of your loved ones will do what they can to be there for you. Writing an obituary can be a painful, yet cathartic experience. It’s an opportunity to celebrate a life while also informing friends and neighbours of a loved ones passing. They also provide details on how you can honour the dead – by attending a visitation and funeral or by sending flowers or charitable donations.

While this is all true, some deaths occur under particularly painful circumstances. While many people can come to terms with illness, old age, and even accidents, there are some deaths that are just hard to talk about, let alone write about in an obituary.

How to write a difficult obituary

Earlier this month there was a trending story about a women’s unique obituary. When first reported, it was said she wrote the incredibly humourous obituary herself, but it was later corrected that it was her children who penned it.

Previously, we posted a blog about how to write a traditional obituary . This post was full of common practices for those who want to keep it simple and classic.

The unique obituary of Sybil Marie Hicks was the complete opposite of simple and traditional! While humous and unique obituaries aren’t right for everyone, but in this case, the deceased’s children felt it captured their mother’s personality. Once the death notice went viral, people across the country were laughing and crying about a women they never knew.

One line that was particularly hilarious was this:

“I finally have the smoking hot body I have always wanted … having been cremated.”

Have the death pronounced

If your loved doesn’t pass away in a hospital, you will need a legal pronouncement of death. If your loved one was under at-home hospice care, call the hospice nurse to pronounce it, otherwise call 911. If there is a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order, have it available for when the emergency personnel arrive. They can pronounce the death.

When you pass away in Canada, it’s fairly straight forward. You follow the process, by calling a funeral home, the police, or an ambulance. Loved ones claim the body, and handle the remains according to their wishes or religious or cultural norms.

However, it gets a lot more complicated when someone dies in another country.

Dying Abroad: What Canadians need to Know

The Government of Canada has a helpful webpage dedicated to helping families and loved ones navigate the complexities of dealing with someone’s death in another country. It can be particularly hard if you don’t speak the language of that nation and they have unfamiliar rules and customs.

Here are some of the points from the government webpage summarized:

The person making the big decisions should have access to the decease’s will and has power of attorney. This would be done at home in Canada or they could travel abroad to deal with local officials.
If the deceased had travel insurance, contact the provider as soon as possible.

And RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan) is an investment you make for your future. The idea is that you contribute to the savings during your working years as it grows in value and gains interest, so that when you’re ready to retire you have money to live on.

With good planning, the money will last you through retirement. While, you don’t ever want to run out of money, many people are trained to save, save, save and not spend.

Taking out your RRSP

For working people, we are deterred from withdrawing from our RRSPs because it becomes taxable income. We know it’s bad to take it out before retirement.

Most people retire around the age of 65, more or less. The thing about RRSPs is that they need to be converted into an RRIF (Registered Retirement Income Fund) by the end of your 71st year. RRIFs come with annual mandatory withdrawals.

The idea of the annual withdrawals is to ensure you’re using your retirement savings during your retirement. The trouble is, many retirees take out the minimum, opting to leave the bulk of the funds in the account to gain interest.

While being financially responsible is a virtue, it might not be the best strategy in the end.

Aim to use your savings up

Any RRSP or RRIF money left not withdrawn after your death will be taxed when your executor starts the process of dividing up your estate as per your wishes.

If you think dying gets you out of paying taxes, you are sadly mistaken. While it’s technically true that YOU won’t be paying your taxes after your dead, your loved ones in charge of settling your estate, however, will have to file your final tax return.

Before any estate can be settled, the executors of the will must file a final tax return for the deceased. This will settle any money owing (or owed) before any proceeds are to be divided up.

Filing a final tax return differs from the standard procedure in some ways. Here are some things to remember.

Facts about Final Tax Returns

You must file on behalf of the deceased, just as you must file when you are alive.
A final tax return will cover any income or or taxable benefits from January 1 to the date of the person’s death.
Any income received after a person’s death (a pay cheque, etc.) can be filed as a separate return.
If the deceased was the sole proprietor of a business, and the business’s year-end occurred before the death, you must file by the end of the calendar year.
You may need to fill out a T3 form
Executors must sign the forms with their name and title (Executor, etc.).
If the deceased used an accountant or tax preparation service, it’s wise to go to them, as their information will be on file, including previous return documents.

Just as you can pre-plan your funeral, you can pre-plan what happens to your estate after you die. That is the purpose of a will. Without a will your loved ones may not receive what you would have liked them to. It can also take a long time for the estate to be settled.

You pre-arrange your funeral so that your wishes will be honoured, and your loved ones won’t have to stress over the planning details. Same goes for your estate. With a will you can divide your assets up as you please and appoint an executor to ensure that everything happens as you intended.

As you get older naturally start thinking about the end of your life. As morbid as that may sound, it’s completely normal. Having a will doesn’t mean you’re ready to die, it simply means you’re prepared.

Update your Will

As the saying goes, there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes. If the former happens, loved ones still have to deal with the latter, even though the person is gone. Since we’re well into tax season, and the May 1, 2017, deadline is fast approaching, we thought we would give you some quick tips on preparing taxes for a deceased person.

Lucky for us, the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) has a lot of information on its website.

The Final Return

The final tax return is to be filed for the year the individual passed away (starting January 1 to the date of the death). For income earned after the death, a T3 Trust Income Tax and Information Return form must be filled out. If you are unsure of what to include in this form, speak to an accountant or tax specialist for assistance. The CRA has information online, as well.

When do you have to file?

The general rule, set out by the CRA, is as follows:

For deaths that occur between January 1 and October 31, the final return needs to be filed by April 30 of the following year.
If the death occurs between November 1 and December 31, it needs to be filed within six months after the date of death.

There are lots of little exceptions and differences for specific situations, which our outlined on the CRA website . Again, these can be discussed with a professional tax expert if you are unsure.

What if the Deceased Owes Tax?

It’s important for the person or people in charge of the deceased’s finances to file the final return on time, regardless of their ability to pay. Even if you cannot pay the full amount in a lump sum, you can avoid penalties by filing by the due dates.

In certain cases, CRA will not penalize you if you can prove you were late in filing due to circumstances beyond your control. To apply for this, you will need to fill out the appropriate forms to prove your case.

Odd Burial Practices from the Past

Burial has been a practice for centuries. It’s the final step in a funeral – putting our loved ones in their final resting place. While burials have kept some rituals from the past, there are some oddities.

Today is Halloween – a day where we see images of spooky cemeteries, with ghosts and witches and mummies, but sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

Strange Burial Practices from Way Back When:

The safety coffin: Sometimes called a security coffin , this burial system was designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to prevent premature burial (aka being buried alive!).

Yes! this was a legitimate fear back in the day, as medicine was not what it is today. Safety coffins featured an apparatus that allowed the buried, but not dead to alert nearby people. This was often a bell that could be rung from inside the coffin.

Other styles were invented, but the bell system is the most well-known.

Catacombs: In broad terms, catacombs are underground tombs – often associated with the Romans. However, many of you are probably familiar with the Paris catacombs, which have its own story.

The Paris catacombs were created due to overcrowded cemeteries in the city. They hold the remains (skeletal remains) of over six million people! Due to the disorganization of other grave sites – which saw mass graves collapsing – many of the bones were unidentified. This is why the Paris Catacombs are organized with decorative walls using bones of various types to create patterns.

Mummification: The ancient Egyptians had very specific rituals when it came to interring their dead. They believed if these steps weren’t followed it would hinder their chances of getting to the afterlife. Mummifying the body was a huge part of this.

Bodies were wrapped in linen and sometimes plaster. Organs were removed before and placed in jars. There were other items placed around the body – part of the ritual. The mummified body was then placed in a sarcophagus or wooden coffin. There were often peace offerings and wall paintings and other ornamental features inside the tomb to ensure a safe passage to the afterlife.

Today…

Queen Victoria Mourning & Other Royal Rituals

Victoria Day is a Canadian holiday celebrating Queen Victoria’s birthday, which was May 24, 1819. And while the holiday celebrates the life of our second longest reigning monarch (Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her), one of the most often told stories about Queen Victoria is about how she mourned her beloved husband, Prince Albert.

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha died in late 1861 of typhoid fever. The Queen was so devastated by his death that she wore mourning clothes (black) for the rest of her life. She also shuttered herself in, avoiding London. She was known as “The Widow of Windsor.”

On January 22, 1901, Queen Victoria died at the age of 81 and was interred at Frogmore Mausoleum, Windsor. This means that she mourned Prince Albert for nearly 40 years.

The Royal Family: Mourning and Burials beyond Queen Victoria

While the story of The Widow of Windsor is intriguing, it’s not the only curious tale about the royal family’s traditions when it comes to death, burial and mourning.

For instance, the current family must always travel with a black outfit in case a member of the family dies while they’re away. This started when Queen Elizabeth II, then Princess Elizabeth, was away when her father, King George VI, passed away. Attendants had to bring her black clothing aboard the airplane after it landed so she could change and disembark in the proper attire.

Then there is the discovery and reburial of the body of King Richard III . Richard III was the last English king to die in battle. After his death, his body was removed from the battlefield and crudely buried at Greyfriars Friary in Leicester. After the church was dissolved and demolished, the body was more or less forgotten. In 2012, a team found the spot where the church once stood and began excavating what was then a parking lot. Yes, a famous English king was discovered beneath a parking lot 500 years after his burial. He was reburied in Leicester Cathedral in 2015.

Speaking of Richard III, the youngest English monarch to die was his predecessor Edward V.

King Henry VIII

You cannot talk about the English Monarchy and death and not mention King Henry VIII. King Henry VIII is most famous for his six wives. As many of us know, some of them had untimely and gristly endings. The six wives were: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catharine Parr.

Some people remember their fate with this poem: Divorced, Beheaded, Died. Divorced, Beheaded, Survived.

Other interesting fact about Henry VIII is that he was buried next to his 3rd wife – Jane Seymour. Why Jane? She died giving birth to a son – giving Henry what his previous two wives could not: a male heir. She also died before she could fall out of his favour.

Last Halloween, we talked about the Mexican tradition, Day of the Dead . This year we will look at the Celtic origin of the holiday and how this pagan tradition honoured the dead.

Precursor to Halloween: Samhain & All Saints Day

The Pagan festival of Samhain took place between October 31 and November 1, and landed between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice.

The costume aspect stems from Samhain, where people would put on disguises and visit neighbours asking for food.

Where the honouring the dead aspect comes in is in the form of a feast. Pagans believed that the souls of dead relatives would return to their homes for food and shelter during Samhain, so they would leave empty chairs and a table setting for them.

While today’s Halloween has all but lost the honouring dead relatives aspect, the costumes and community sharing continues.

The November 1 Holiday of All Saints Day (aka All Hallows Day) merged with Samhain to create our modern Halloween. All Saints Day is fallowed by All Souls Day. These three two days, combined with All Hallows’ Eve, represented the Western churches belief that there is a strong connections between the living and the dead.

All Hallows’ Eve

While for many of us, Halloween is about Trick-or-Treating, wearing costumes, attending parties, and carving pumpkins, many did and still do treat it as the first day of a three-day Christian holiday.

The tradition of lighting candles at the graves of deceased relatives continues for some devout observers. Some worshipers even abstain from eating meat on All Hallows’ Eve.

While tonight was probably more about candy, costumes and jack-o-lanterns, we can learn something from the Irish Celts and early Christians, and think about our loved ones who have passed.

South Park Street Cemetery is one of the largest Christian cemeteries outside of Europe and North America. It opened in 1767 and was used until 1830. Today it is a heritage site.

This cemetery is a reminder of British colonialism in India. Good or bad, it’s a part of history that we shouldn’t forget.

Don’t forget that even though these are tourist attractions, these are still cemeteries – so it’s important to enter these places with respect.

New Year’s Resolutions for the Bereaved

If you lost someone close to you this year – be it a friend, family member, colleague, or classmate – you are probably entering 2018 with a very different mind set. New Year’s Resolutions might seem silly or trivial, and life feels unpredictable.

While it may not work for everyone, some find planning and working towards a goal is a great way to cope with a loss. Here are some suggestions to help you add purpose and meaning to the coming year.

Volunteer

Many find that giving up some free time for a cause that’s important to them is a great way to get outside of one’s comfort zone. If you want to, choose a cause that relates to the person you lost this year. Whether it’s working with a local charity, helping at a school, coaching a sport’s team, or helping out at a community event. It’s a great way to give back, and you might even meet some new friends with similar goals.

Practice Self-Care

Many of us spend a lot of time doing things for others. Whether it’s working hard at our job, caring for our families, or making time for our friends. These are all wonderful and worthy ways to pass our time here on earth. That said, many of us neglect to care for ourselves. We’re so busy worrying about others – bosses, parents, children, friends – that we forget to worry about ourselves. Self-care is something everyone needs to implement into their lives in some way, shape, or form. This is especially true if you are grieving. Whether it’s taking a nice hot bath undisturbed, practicing yoga every morning, or taking the time to read a good book and drink a hot cup of tea in the evenings. Self-care can be going for a run to clear your head, or joining a club or sports team that you enjoy. It’s about doing things that make you happy and bring you peace.

Travel

Whether you go camping in a local park or travel abroad – travel can be quite restorative. Is there a place you’ve always wanted to go but never did because of some silly reason? if this year has taught you anything it’s that life is short and precious. Make 2018 the year you save for your dream vacation. Experiences are often more valuable than things.

Spend more time with loved ones

Is there an aunt or grandparent you don’t visit enough? A friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with but haven’t? Stop putting it off. Even if it’s just dropping by for tea or meeting up for coffee – it can be meaningful to all involved. If you can’t visit, make a point of calling or Skyping more often to maintain that bond and connection.

First Christmas Without Your Loved One

Losing a loved one is never easy – and the holiday season can amplify those emotions. While skipping the month of December might sound tempting, avoidance is not that answer. There things you can do to make it easier.

Accept one invitation

While saying no to every invitation seems like a good idea, it can be helpful to go to at least one festive event. Choose one with friends or family you care about and trust and feel comfortable around. You don’t want to attend an event where you feel further isolated. When you’re surrounded by loved ones it can be easier, as many will be sharing in your grief.

Enjoy alone time

Self-care is an important part of healing. The holidays can be stressful as it is, so be sure to enjoy some quiet time. Sit and read by the fire, or take a warm bath or a soak in a hot tub, or watch a movie or listen to music. It doesn’t have to be holiday themed – just simple relaxing activities that you enjoy doing alone.

Visit with friends

It doesn’t have to be a party or event, just a cup of coffee or a lunch. Meeting with friends you love and trust can be a great comfort to you. If you have a support system, lean on them. If a friend lives far away, call them if you need to talk.

Acknowledge the absence

Holidays will feel different. Not just this year, but every year going forward. Traditions will end, but it’s important to remember the good times. Instead of pretending like everything is fine, recognize your loss. Some people find it comforting to do certain things in memory of their deceased loved one, such as make their favourite dish, or play their favourite Christmas carol, or hang their favourite ornament. Others attend services at their church.

Let others help

If you always cooked the holiday meal, or your deceased spouse did, let others step in and fill those shoes. Other’s may offer to drive you places, or bring you some groceries. Don’t say no to everyone. Sometimes you need to accept help when it’s truly needed. If your neighbour offers to help you clean your house, or shovel your driveway, it’s okay to take them up on that offer.

Take it one day at a time

There’s no magic wand that makes everything better. You just have to keep going day by day, holiday by holiday. This year might not feel joyous, and maybe not even next year, but you just have to give yourself time and space to cope with the loss.

Day of the Dead

While we see our neighbours and friends getting ready for Halloween with spooky ghosts and pumpkins on their porches, we forget the origins of this now mostly secular holiday.

While today we celebrate October 31st by dressing up in costumes, trick-or-treating, attending parties, carving pumpkins, and watching scary movies, but it wasn’t always like that.

Like most western holidays, the origins are quite different from the present day traditions.

All Hallows Eve

All Hallows Eve is the night before All Hallows Day – also known as All Saints Day. In early Christianity, this meant praying for the souls of the recently departed. In some churches, parishioners would actually visit the cemeteries to lay flowers and light candles on the graves of loved ones. In some cultures they would leave out meals for these spirits of loved ones. This is perhaps where we get the spooky imagery of graveyards at night. That said, All Hollows Eve was not meant to be scary – but more of a tradition.

Jack-o-lanterns were created by celtic cultures for All Hallows Eve to scare off evil spirits.

Day of the Dead

Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead in Spanish) is a Mexican holiday that happens on November 2 that is closely connected with All Souls Day – the Christian holiday that happens the day after All Hallows Day.

Much like All Hallows Eve, the Day of the Dead is about gathering to remember family members who have passed on. While many Roman Catholic Mexicans celebrate All Saints Day, Día de Muertos is believed to have originated from an Aztec festival.

Traditions include adorning graves of loved ones with marigolds, bread, sugar skulls, tissue paper, fruit and nuts, incense, and more. Sugar skulls have become a popular image in North American culture these days – with the images adorning clothing, cellphone cases, and other items.

Sugar skulls (calavera) are decorative offerings designed to look like a human skull, with some adornments. Small sugar skulls were made to represent children who had passed, and larger ones representing adults.

Day of the Dead is a chance for the living to communicate in some way with their departed relatives. People often share funny or heartwarming stories as a way to interact and remember their loved ones. Their favourite foods are left on their graves, which are gathered before hand in preparation for this day.

Lesson

Whether you consider yourself to be a religious or spiritual person or not, you can take some of these traditions and use them in your daily life. Sharing stories about loved ones and remembering and celebrating their life is important. We don’t have to stop sharing stories once the funeral is over. Keep your loved ones alive in your heart by sharing the joy and laughter they brought you.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are reminded of the many things we are thankful for this year. Many of us will share a splendid feast with loved ones this coming weekend – where we will laugh, share stories, and recall fond memories.

For those who lost a loved one this past year, you might be noticing the empty chair at your dinner table. Their absence might even change the dynamic of the meal. As sad as you feel, it’s important to always remember the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

Be thankful for your family and friends who have been there for you this year. Be thankful for the fond memories you have that can never be taken away from you. Be thankful for the delicious food and the warm embraces.

Start New Traditions

All families change. There will be members who sadly pass, but always remember the circle of life. There might be new nieces, nephews, sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren joining the table. You can pass the torch and let other’s host the meal, or cook the turkey.

Whatever you do, remember that Thanksgiving is about togetherness.

COVID-19 Deaths & Funeral Homes

As of publication, there are 42 confirmed COVID-19 Deaths in York Region , with 883 confirmed cases total. We know that these numbers will rise before we flatten the curve.

Being in the funeral business, we always want to help members of our community during this very difficult time. Our new reality is that we can still help people who’ve lost a loved one, but there are limitations to what we can do at this time.

York Region has released a handy FAQ sheet for Funeral Service Providers, such as Chapel Ridge Funeral Home & Cremation Centre in Markham. To simplify things we will quickly explain how we are to handle funerals and COVID-19 deaths during this pandemic.

Info about Funerals and COVID-19 Deaths

The York Region FAQs touch on a variety of funeral-related topics, here is a summary:

Yes, funeral homes, crematoriums and other related businesses and services are considered essential. This directive came from the Province of Ontario .
Yes, you can still have a funeral. People in our community will continue to die due to Covid and non-Covid illnesses and accidents. Funerals are still allowed, however, we cannot allow crowds, so only a handful of family members and/or loved ones can be in attendance.
Right now, there are no examples of a deceased COVID-19 patient spreading the virus in Canada. This means the risk is low that you will catch it by attending the funeral.
That said, anyone who is sick or showing symptoms or was residing in the same home as the deceased should stay home and self-isolate.
If your faith allows it, some families are opting to defer the funeral or offering a staggered visitation. Some are choosing cremation and putting off interment until it is safe to gather.
If attending a funeral, especially for someone who died of the Noval Coronavirus, do not touch or kiss the body. And do not hug family or touch hands.
Wash your hands with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Consider wearing a mask.
Seat people at least 6-feet away from each other, if holding a traditional funeral.
Ask for a video stream of the service.

How to Cope During Self-Isolation

If you in self-isolation or practicing social distancing, you might be feeling lonely and a bit sad or depressed. This is normal. Many people in our community are scared for their loved ones, particularly seniors either living alone or in long-term care facilities. You cannot visit them, and you fear that they could be vulnerable to COVID-19. Some of you may have lost a loved one during this time and cannot properly grieve because your isolated. You might even be upset that you cannot have a proper funeral at this time. All of these feelings are normal. Many people share your same fears and concerns.

Because we’re all in this together, we want to provide you with tips for getting through this very serious situation.

Surviving Self-Isolation

Socialize while Social Distancing

Just because you have to social distance doesn’t mean you cut off all human contact. We are so fortunate to have many communication tools at our fingertips. See if the nurses at the long-term care facility can set up a video chat with your loved one, chat with your friends on your phone, tablet or computer, or pick up the phone and talk.

You can also go old-school and mail a letter or card to tell someone you miss them, or Happy Birthday or just to thank them for being a friend.

Unplug

While it’s important to stay up-to-date on all coronavirus related news, it’s just as important to shut it off sometimes. Stay off technology for a bit by reading a book, cooking or baking, or working on an arts and crafts project. Put on some music and knit rather than having the TV on.

Go Outside

If you have a backyard or a balcony, you can self-isolate while still going outside. If you’re not mandated to self-isolate, you can go for a walk alone or with members of your household. If you have a dog, take it for a walk. Just remember when walking, give others 6-feet of space when passing. This is social distancing. You can get exercise and fresh air without endangering others. This doesn’t mean you cannot say hello or wave to a neighbour from afar.

Recognize why you’re doing this

Another way to feel better while in self-isolation is to acknowledge your role in fixing this global health crisis. By staying away from others you are helping to flatten the curve, thus slowing the spread of COVID-19. This is a small sacrifice for the greater good.

If you are Grieving

If you are grieving a loss during this crisis and aren’t coping well while self-isolating, there are some things you can do. There are apps you can use to access remote councilling services to help you through it.
