Obituary for Edith Benta
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Edith Agatha Benta. Edith died peacefully at her home on the morning of January 1, 2018 at the age of 93.
Edith was born in Bassetere, St.Kitts on December 27, 1924 to Mary Aselina and Arthur Hendrickson. She was able to travel to many other neighbouring islands growing up, islands like St. Croix, St. Maarten, and Antigua, which later gave her an interest in moving abroad.
Edith is predeceased by her loving husband, Arthur Benta, of 68 years. They were married in St.Kitts and lived there until they migrated to Canada in the 1979. She is also predeceased by her sister, Lillian Hendrickson.
Edith is lovingly remembered and missed by her daughters, Gwendolyn Jordan, Sylvina Gurley, Ruth Cuffy, and her son, Herbert Isles (wife Doris); her sister, Thelma Sampson; and her 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edith enjoyed spending time with her family in every way. Having helped raise her numerous grandchildren, Edith loved serving them through food, fellowship, and laughter. She loved sharing the domesticities of life like cooking, sewing, and needlepoint. Those close to her would have heard the numerous geographic facts of the Caribbean she was able to recite in any given conversation. Also, she was known for how plainly she spoke her mind about daily life. Edith was a generous, honest, and humorous woman, and spending any short amount of time with her would reveal her passion for the word of God and the love of others. Her grandchildren will not forget the passion she had in expressing the greatness of God in her life. Her children will not forget the example she has left for them as a loving mother.
All are welcome to attend the funeral service for Edith, which will be held at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Avenue, Markham, ON, L3R 5G1 on Thursday, January 18th at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing one hour before at 10:00 a.m. The Interment to follow at Pine Ridge Memorial Garden, 1757 Church Street North West, Ajax, ON L1T 4R3.
