Obituary for John Glynn Henry
Professor Emeritus J. Glynn Henry PhD P Eng
Glynn passed away peacefully on September 13, 2017 at the age of 91. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 70 years, Pat (nee Thurston) and by his children Robin (Barbara), Dr Wendy (Ken LeDoux), Pam (Paul Perras), Beth (Blair Christopher), Laura (Dr Bill Hanson). He will also be missed by his beloved grandchildren, Alexis (Roland Furlan), Zachary (Salome), Luke (Holly), Jake (Jessica), Cole (Andrea), Connor, Rebecca and Thomas, as well as his great grandchildren Lily, Elliot, Adrianne and Wesley.
Glynn’s life work consisted of 20 years as principal and director of R.V. Anderson Associates, in charge of environmental and research activities. In 1994 Glynn was named a fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering as well as a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and Engineers Canada.
The second half of Glynn’s life was spent as a professor at the University of Toronto. He was awarded the Albert E. Berry medal of 1996 and made a life member of the American Environmental Federation in 2000, and of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. Glynn was the principal author of the best selling textbook Environmental Science and Engineering which was adopted by 75 universities in Canada and USA as well as overseas.
Glynn earned his degrees at Queens, U of T and Princeton.
His devotion to his work was surpassed only by his love and commitment to his family. He adored his children, three generations of them, and set a great example by which they were all affected.
A private, family funeral will be held.
