Obituary for Ytske Eyre (Pousma)
It is with very heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Ytske (Pousma) Eyre who, on August 18th in her 79th year, lost her courageous battle with cancer.
Ytske was the loving mother of Shawn Eyre of London and Tanya Dallaire (David) of Markham. She was the adoring and proud grandmother of Phoebe, Kaelan and Jeremy Dallaire.
She was predeceased by her father, Ale Pousma, her mother, Riemke Gulmans-Pousma, her younger sister Emke Pousma-Adema and step-brother, Harm (Maaike). She leaves behind her brother, Marten Pousma (Etty), and brother-in-law Piet Adema (Yanna), all of The Netherlands as well as eight deVries cousins and extended family whom she came to live with in Canada when she set out for an adventure moving from The Netherlands to Canada in 1956.
Ytske will be missed by sister-in-law, Theda Burns (Robert) and brother-in-law, Harley Eyre (Linda) both of Brockville as well as many nieces and nephews: Margriet (Riemer) of Australia, Alwin (Rennie), Rita (Hans), Babette (Herman), and Douwe Pieter (Miranda) of The Netherlands as well as Stephen (Kelly) of Ottawa, Matthew (Min) of Brockville and Aaron of Toronto and she will be reunited with nephew Geoffrey.
She will also be missed by Richard and Marilyn Eyre who, despite divorce and remarriage, have remained friends and a part of her extended family.
Ytske was “Nana” to more than just Phoebe, Kaelan and Jeremy. She will be dearly missed by the Szilassy-Kruger family of London, the Moore family of London and the Treharne-Pickard family of Markham as well as many of Phoebe, Kaelan and Jeremy’s friends who all fondly called her Nana.
And, of course, Ytske will be deeply missed by the many, many, many good friends she has made over the years…. from The Netherlands to Brockville to London to Markham. She will be especially missed by Shawn’s good friend Michelle Pennacchietti and her husband Pat who have done so much for Shawn these past five years since his stroke and the many friends Ytske has made at Parkwood Hospital in London (staff, volunteers and patients alike).
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of physicians and health care professionals all working at or in collaboration with Markham Stouffville Hospital. To Dr. Alan Ing, a surgeon and very caring man who Ytske credits with saving her life 3 times; who acted quickly when cancer was found for the first time in 2004, who kept a close watch over her and detected early lung cancer in 2007 and who did everything possible when cancer came again in 2015. To Dr. Henry Solow, oncologist who successfully treated her first two occurrences of cancer and to Dr. Leena Hajra, oncologist who recognized Ytske’s strength and determination and helped her battle this last and most- aggressive cancer. To Dr. Depti Pasricha who has been a consummate and caring family doctor for Ytske for 17 years. And lastly to Dr. Emilie Lam, Dr. Andy Patterson, nurse consultant Cheri McNeil, the CCAC, RN Joyce, PSW Sharon, and all the staff of 2-Centre at Markham Stouffville hospital who did a tremendous job of caring for Ytske in-hospital and then seamlessly coordinated and transferred her care to our family home so that Ytske could have the best possible quality of life for her remaining time. We can’t say thank you enough for the care and support every step of the way.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family would like to suggest making a donation to one of the charities that Ytske supported: Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation, Parkwood Hospital Foundation or Sick Kids Hospital Foundation. Alternatively, if anyone would like to make a contribution to what we have called Shawn’s quality-of-life-fund (used to buy concert tickets, movie tickets, transportation etc) we think this would please Ytske very much to know that he is continuing to be cared for as she had done. Electronic transfers for this purpose can be directed to Tanya’s email of firstname.lastname@example.org.
